Workshop in Kuala Lumpur

At a training workshop, held on 12th October in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, we taught TFT staff members about resilience in food systems. Divided into three sessions, the goal was to understand resilience from a general perspective and apply steps of our resilience guidelines to the palm oil value chain in Sabah, Malaysia.

These steps included the mapping of the system, where key stakeholders were identified and categorised according to their power and interest in the palm oil value chain in Sabah. Then, we defined the relationship between these stakeholders. In a last step, we identified the impacts (positive and negative) of three shock scenarios (normal case, drought, flooding) for each food value chain activity (input supply, production, processing, retailing and consumption).

This training provided the participants with an opportunity to think out of the box through adopting a systemic and holistic perspective on the palm oil value chain. Thinking beyond individual value chain activities (e.g. smallholder production), participants learned about interconnections between different activities and actors of the palm oil value chain in Sabah.
